Walked 20.03 miles from Payson, Utah to Mona, Utah today to complete day 12 of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Walk Across Utah.
I was on the road just past 6 am and grateful for an overcast day through the first nine miles. The sun made the final 11 miles a bit toasty, but all-in-all, a great walk today.
Answers to recent questions I’ve been asked:
How are you preparing yourself for each day’s walk?
I start preparing the night before with a carb load. I set out my clothes and shoes, and prepare / reload my backpack with CLIF bars and water/Liquid IV. I also recharge my ear pods and portable phone charger.
In the morning, I load drinks, snacks and food in an ice chest with a couple cold packs; get dressed; and drive to my starting point. While I’m walking, two people advance my car to my finish location.
Do you change into different walking shoes each day or alternate between two pair?
I presently have 3 pairs of New Balance shoes. One that’s a half size bigger and I wear them if my feet are swollen; and two pair that are my normal size and identical pairs of shoes. One pair I use each day, and I have a new pair to replace my current shoes when they start to break down. I only alternate to the larger shoes if my feet are swollen.
What do you find yourself thinking about during the long stretches? How are you keeping your mind occupied?
I have lots of thinking time, but I also have a lot of time to see the beautiful sights; find pictures to take and share; Audible books and podcasts; music; and I walk for stretches without ear pods to take in my surroundings, greet and engage with people; and focus on being present with nature and the beauty that surrounds me each day. I also need to stay focused on the route so I don’t miss turns along the way.
Now that you’ve surpassed thee 200-mile mark, how is your body holding up and how are you feeling? Are you where you thought you’d be through 200 miles?
I feel like my body is absorbing the miles well. It’s definitely more miles than I’ve ever walked over 12 days, but overall, I feel good. A few of my toes are pretty sore, but that’s to be expected. I felt the training miles I logged the last five months prepared me well, but I didn’t know how the volume of compounding miles would impact me over the 30 days. So far, I feel real good, and hopeful my body continues to absorb the daily milage over the remaining 18 days.
Thank you for everyone’s positive energy, encouraging messages and the questions, which I’ll continue answering here in these daily blog posts.
Up Next: Mona, Utah to Highway 132 tomorrow and then Highway 132 to Moroni on Friday.
