Walked 15.06 miles from Gunnison to Salina today to complete Day 17 of 30 in the FCA Walk Across Utah. Only 13 days to go in this challenge.
Overall, I feel good. While my legs, ankles and feet have little soreness, the blisters have been a bit challenging on my toes, and I have more today than any other day. I’ve treated each, will rest tonight and be ready to go in the morning.
I’ve been asked by a few people what are some takeaways from this walk as I’ve begun the second half of the challenge.
I have quite a few. One takeaway that has been on my mind since the first week of the walk is this: In life, we can get going so fast each day that we're not aware of our surroundings. We’re simply going through the motions (our daily routines) and moving quickly from A to B, and sometimes we miss opportunities to engage people, or make someone’s day better.
On this walk, I’ve committed to be present each day; be aware of my surroundings, whether it's nature or people, and appreciate everything that crosses my path.
While passing through a park, I engaged with a homeless woman, and I enjoyed a conversation with her, and we shared a CLIF bar together. The smile on our faces lasted well after I left the park.
That encounter, for me anyway, likely would not happen during my normal, fast-paced, busy day. But after this walk, I know it will because I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact it can have; not only for others I engage, but on me, as well.
Another question I’ve been asked often is where do you stay, and am I camping out each night.
I did answer this in an earlier post, but I’ll update everyone who may have missed that post. I’m staying with family, friends and at churches along the way. I’ve enjoyed meeting people, and greatly appreciate all the hospitality extended to me.
Another recent question: Do people pull over in their vehicles and ask if you need help or a ride?
People have pulled over a number of times in remote locations where locals don’t typically see people walking down a highway. I thank them for stopping, offering a ride, and share why I’m walking.
Thanks again for following along on this adventure, all the positive messages and asking questions. As I’ve shared, I’ll continue to answer one question each day in my social media posts, and I’ll answer more questions in the walk blog at https://utahfca.org/walk-across-utah.
